When looking for a therapist you may have seen the term ‘consultation call’ come up a few times. This may sound intimidating and this post aims to explain what you can expect.

I offer a free 15 minute consultation call to any one interested in starting therapy. This phone call offers you a chance to get to know me before committing to any sessions and gives us a chance to discuss your expectations and hopes for therapy. This isn’t an assessment session and you can be as vague or as specific as you like. This call is also a chance for me to ensure I am the right person for you to work with before you commit to any sessions.

The call is also an opportunity to ask any questions you may have. These questions may be practical, such as how much do you charge? What is your availability? Where are you located? Or they may be based on understanding how I work or how I may specifically work with something you want to work on in therapy. There is no such thing as a silly question and the consultation call can be a great opportunity to talk through any worries you may have about starting therapy.

The consultation call is completely optional but I do recommend it to make sure you are picking the right therapist for you. Therapy is a commitment both financially and time wise. It can be daunting to make that commitment and choosing between profiles or websites can be difficult, sometimes chatting to someone will make it clearer who you would like to work with. Making sure you are starting with the right therapist and right type of therapy can save you a lot faff and stoping/starting with therapy. If a consultation call feels too intimidating, I’m happy to answer any questions over email as well.
